CS371p Fall 2021: Sruthi Rudravajjala
What did you do this past week?
This past week the course load was pretty light for this class because we are in between projects. I submitted the voting project on Monday and attended lecture. I also read the paper and made my annotations.
What’s in your way?
I’m a little confused about constant variables and constant pointers but Friday’s quiz helped clarify that material. Being cold called helps a lot with staying engaged especially in an online format but I think the online format of this class works really well. The breakout rooms also help when everyone participates. I think I plan to play around with some small examples to solidify the concepts we learned this week.
What will you do next week?
Next week I will get started on the new project and hopefully make some good headway on that. I’ve got a lot going on in the next couple of weeks so I’d like to get ahead of the chaos. I’m pretty overwhelmed outside of this class with job hunting and other assignments so I’m a little worried about balancing my time.
If you read it, what did you think of the Paper #7: Open-Closed Principle?
I read the open-closed principle paper in CS 373 (SWE) and found it much more applicable in this class compared to SWE. Since the paper is written from the perspective of C and since this class emphasize object-oriented programming, I found it much more relevant.
What was your experience of arguments, returns, and consts?
I think the lectures this week clarified a lot of confusion I had when I first learned C and also helped me solidify those concepts. Professor Downing mentioned in class that the best way to become confident about the concepts was to play with small examples so I will probably do that in the coming week.
What made you happy this week?
My sister came to visit me in Austin and we went to a drag brunch, did some hiking, and plan to go to ACL on Sunday!
What’s your pick-of-the-week or tip-of-the-week?
My tip of the week is to find a hobby that helps you relax! I took up running about a two years ago and now that I’m back in Austin I have found it so enjoyable to run outside. I’m really looking forward to the cooler weather because it is so therapeutic to run outside when you aren’t dying from heat exhaustion.
